Counselling, groups, workshops and support for people with physical disabilities*, their partners and health professionals, that is what we do here at Spokz People. We aim to empower people, enhancing their lives, relationships, mental and sexual wellbeing. We believe that disability experience is essential in providing disability services and are proactive in employing people with disabilities.
Spokz People was set up after we discovered that many people with disabilities would prefer and would benefit from therapists who have a disability or specialise in disability. On top of physically accessible services, our knowledge and experience of disability means we understand the possible issues surrounding disability and are flexible in catering for different needs.
We support the social model of disability which looks both at a person's impairment and all the relevant factors that affect their ability to be a full and equal participant in society. We recognise that many problems faced by people with disabilities do not result just from their impairments, but by the fact that society is predominantly set-up for non-disabled people. Counselling and sex&relationship support is offered UK-wide by telephone or online. Support groups and in-person counselling are currently in the following areas: Lichfield, Staffordshire, Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Erdington, West Midlands. Other areas available on request and/or through therapists on our directory, so please check.
*Disability language can be a hot topic! 'Disabled people', 'people with disabilities' or 'people with an impairment’: we understand that different people like different words and that many prefer the term 'disabled people' to reflect current barriers in society or a strong disabled identity. We see the person first, but acknowledge both the impairment and the disability. We use the term ‘people with disabilities’ so you can find us online.
